"The Trio first played together in 1967 on a recording called Now He Sings, Now He Sobs. The meeting was brief (one day in a New York studio) but not easily forgotten. Now, all these years later, it seems as though no time has passed - picking up right where we left off.

The music we played in November '81, during the period these tapes were made, varied widely in approach and content. Two areas of apparently extreme contrast were chosen to make the two records in this set. Both areas are new ground for the Trio.

On record 1 the Trio improvised with no or little discussion before playing. The exceptions are Slippery When Wet which is a pre-composed 8 bar line and Trio Improvisation 3 which is a predetermined rhythmic motif that was just set prior to recording.

On record 2 we play compositions by Thelonious Monk. These tracks were recorded many months before Monk's passing and aren't intended as a memorial but as renditions of what I consider some of the classic music of the 20th century."
